Goldie Hawn opens up about her depression in her young days and says she ‘couldn’t go outside in public’

Goldie Hawn is a celebrity who exudes positivity in every setting, be it interviews, film premieres, or red carpet events. She is truly unique. Having spent her entire life in the public eye, Hawn remains grounded and cherishes a tranquil life with her long-time partner, actor Kurt Russell. Their relationship stands as a testament to the notion that Hollywood marriages can endure, perhaps because they have chosen not to marry, which they believe has contributed to their lasting bond.

Born on November 21, 1945, in Washington, D.C., to Rut and Laura, who operated a dance school, it was no surprise that Hawn developed a passion for dance and ballet. Her first public performance occurred at the age of ten in the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo’s production of The Nutcracker.

Those who recognized Hawn’s innate talent for dance anticipated her success in the entertainment industry, and they were correct. The young Hawn gained widespread attention through her role in the television series Good Morning, World, captivating millions. In 1968, she made her film debut as a dancer in Disney’s The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, which not only propelled her career forward but also marked her first encounter with Russell. Although he was younger and she found him quite attractive, they did not pursue a relationship at that time.

“I was 21 and he was 16,” Hawn recounted in a BBC Radio 4 interview. “I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young. Years later, we reconnected, and I remembered how much I liked him when we first met. We both agreed we would never date another actor, which just goes to show that you can never predict the future.”

Their paths crossed again while filming Swing Shift, and that was the turning point. Russell was unable to resist her allure and approached her with the line, “Man, you’ve got a great figure.”

Following that initial date, they have remained inseparable ever since. Now, they enjoy the joys of grandparenthood and embrace their new roles with love.Despite the seemingly remarkable nature of her life, Hawn has faced significant challenges throughout her journey. At the age of 21, she encountered depression and struggled to manage her mental health.

During an appearance on Good Morning Britain, the acclaimed actress candidly discussed her experiences, stating, “When I was young, I became depressed. I was 21 and on the path to success.

“It may sound harsh, but it was an incredibly challenging situation; I didn’t necessarily desire that.” She recounted her fear of leaving her home and facing public attention, which was particularly difficult given that the film industry had already become a substantial part of her life, and the public was captivated by the young, beautiful woman who had rapidly risen to fame.

“I didn’t aspire to be a prominent figure; I wanted to return home, get married, and teach dance,” she elaborated.

“I had a plan and was grounded in reality, without any illusions of grandeur. This was a personal journey that I navigated,” she continued. “I sought help from a doctor and a psychologist, and I learned techniques to calm my mind and understand brain function.”

Having a well-known figure like Hawn address such a delicate topic is immensely valuable. She actively strives to support others facing similar struggles with depression and emphasizes the significance of mental health through her organization, MindUp, which primarily targets young children. Hawn believes that providing assistance is even more vital during the pandemic, as the ensuing chaos has impacted the mental well-being of many individuals. “When the pandemic struck, it shocked everyone,” Hawn remarked on Good Morning Britain. “We were unsure how to manage our children while grappling with our own issues. It presented a multitude of challenges.

“Each of us may have different reasons for feeling down, anxious, or depressed.”
